History Of Hybrid Cars
Green Car History
Ten years ago there was hardly anyone interested in this idea at all. There were only two to choose from – the original Honda Insight and the gawkily styled 1997 Mark I Prius – and both attracted small numbers of buyers.
But while a hybrid might emit significantly less CO2 than a car of comparable size, it’s a long way from emitting no carbon dioxide at all, which is why they are merely stepping stones towards the truly zero-emission car.
Altough a lot of these cars include hyrdrogen powered fuel cells and battery powered motors they all face some serious upgrading before they get close to the normal cars.
Something a bit better than this is the electric car. Fuel cell vehicles are really coming along and with the right funding they could actually start to take over from the normal cars as many people are strong believers in saving the environment.
The main problem when you are thinking of an electric car is actually the distance it is able to travel, it can only go for around 100 miles compared to 300 on a normal car it isnt that brilliant.
If you actually think about it 80-100 miles is way more than you will need for a daily commute but for longer journeys the chrage times takes hours which means it is not going to be very good. Which is why General Motors’ “range-extending” Vauxhall Ampera (aka the Chevrolet Volt) offers a promising compromise when it goes on sale in 2012.
For the first 40 miles it runs on electricity alone – more than enough for most commutes – but for longer journeys an on-board petrol engine recharges the battery to provide a range of more than 300 miles at 40g/km of CO2, or under half what the Prius produces.
When more and more people are starting to buy these cars then the charging and things like that will become a lot easier. The government at the moment will actually help you out by giving around £5000 but the mayor of London wants to make the city one of the leaders in the electric car.
However until such a green car comes out that is actually worth going after something a bit less greener so why not look into the new Audi or of course a Audi TT Roadster
Failing this you could even look into getting Used Cars however it is really up to you on what you do on this but I would say the best thing to do is just wait and see if things are actually going to get worse before you do anything.
